Niles wins Regan Rodrigues Memorial cycle race

Junior Niles rode away with the Open category of the sixth annual Regan Rodrigues Memorial cycle road race on Sunday at West Demerara.

Niles prevailed in the 50-mile race which began at the Wales Police Station, proceeded to Parika and culminated at the Harbour Bridge.

His winning time was one hour, 51 minutes and 19 seconds (1.51.19).

Jude Bentley crossed the finish line in Niles’ trail to take second place while Albert Philander, who has been delivering front line performances in recent meets, came in third.

Tony Simone, Eric Sankar and Mark Lewis closed out the prize winning positions in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.

The other categories contested Sunday turned back at Uitvlugt on the West Coast of Demerara and had its fair share of competition during the route which also ended at the Harbour Bridge.

Gary Benjamin was again ahead of the Veterans category, taking the top prize and limiting Virgil Jones and Linden Blackman to second and third places respectively.

Meanwhile, Monty Parris grabbed the winnings in the over-60 Veterans’ category.

The rivalry in the Junior category of recent race meets has often included Christopher Holder and Paul DeNobrega, and Sunday’s meet was no variant. The latter, however, was second best to Holder yet again when the pair led the juniors across the finish line.

The Upright category saw Kester Croal finishing ahead of second and third place finishers Kunta McKenzie and Mario King while Berbician Marica Dick out-pedalled Naomi Singh, who was her lone competitor in the female category, to secure the top spot.

The successful participants were presented with trophies and hampers, in the presence of Director of Sports, Neil Kumar at the presentation ceremony that followed the race meet.

In addition to his winning trophy, Niles also carted off three prime prizes. Bentley and Philander were rewarded with two prime prizes each, while Croal was also in the prime prize hunt and bagged one.
