Geron Williams paced his way to victory from a field of 33 riders to win the 19th edition of the R&R sponsored 40-mile cycle road race which took place yesterday morning on the West Demerara, from the Demerara Harbour Bridge to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo and back.Williams, competing in his first season as a full-fledged senior covered the distance in one hour 44 minutes 53 seconds. Last year’s champion Christopher Holder did not compete.
Trailing Geron Williams to the line was another Williams, Marlon aka ‘Fishy’ with Albert Philander, Raymond Newton, Daniel Ramchurejee and Alex Mendes finishing as the top six in that order.
Newton who was also the first veteran to cross the line copped 3 of the six prime prizes on offer with Philander taking 2 and Geron Williams the other. Linden Blackman took the number two spot for veterans while Berbice based Neil Reece was the first junior to cross the line ahead of rival Paul De Nobrega.
Gemma Williams represented the sponsors, R&R International Ltd. at the presentation ceremony after the race and complimented all who participated for making the event another success. Williams stated R&R’s commitment towards the continued development of the sport in Guyana.
Organiser Hassan Mohamed also congratulated the competitors for a splendid ride and singled out Traffic Ranks on the West Demerara for a great job in controlling the traffic during the race.
