McKay successfully defends title

Warren McKay successfully defended his 2009 title in the feature 35-lap event of the 19th annual R&R International Limited cycling programme organized by National Coach Hassan Mohamed held yesterday around the inner circuit of the National Park.

The event, which was scheduled to be held in February, was closely contested in all categories as some of Guyana’s best cyclists competed for trophies and prime prizes which were sponsored by R&R International and presented by Robin Goring.

Davenand Bissoon won the BMX boys Open event and took the prime prize and winning trophy in the 12-14 years event. Virgil Jones did the same in the Veterans under 50 five-lap event.
Meanwhile, Robert Beaton rode his way to first place in the Veterans over-50 five lapper.
Rising star out of the Flying Ace Cycling club from Berbice, Neil Reece, grabbed the winning trophy and both prime prizes in the Juvenile 10 lap event after he lapped the field.

Reece became the fastest Berbician rider in the category when he broke the Berbice record which was set in 1992 by Wazim Gaffoor. Reece finished in a time of 24 minutes, 52 seconds

Jude Bentley won the Upright five-lap race and went away with the prime prize finishing with a time of 13 minutes 39 seconds.
Other BMX winners were Antonio Samaroo, Adrian Sharma, and Darius Ramsammy.
In the main event McKay successfully defended his 2009 title in the 35 lap event against a competitive field by clocking one hour, 24 minutes and 17 seconds.

Mc Kay edged past Robin Persaud on the finish line with Marlon Williams and Enzo Matthews closely behind. The race, which began with 12 riders, finished with only six as the rest couldn’t keep up with the pace set by McKay and the other top finishers in the leading pack.

National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed in his closing remarks congratulated the winners of the event and encouraged everyone to be present at the next cycling meet which is scheduled for today on the West Bank of Demerara.
