Alonzo Greaves outmaneuvered a top class field to earn victory and the top cash prize in the Annual Forbes Burnham birth anniversary cycle road race was took place yesterday afternoon from Homestretch Avenue to Belfield and back.In early afternoon sun which saw steady and strong Atlantic winds hitting the riders, Greaves won the 32 mile event which pedaled off at 14:00hrs in one hour 13 minutes.
He was followed to the line by Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Enzo Matthews, Robin Persaud, Marlon Morrison and Warren Mc Kay in that order. Persaud snapped up 4 of the 10 prime prizes with 2 each for Greaves and Mc Kay and one apiece to Marlon Williams and Raymond Newton.
The Guyana Cycling Federation organised event, sponsored by the Forbes Burnham Foundation saw Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson taking the veterans division with Newton second and Junior Niles third.
The junior category was taken by Linden’s Rastaff O’Selmo, Kurt La Rose placed second and Paul De Nobrega third.
Speaking at the presentation, Vincent Alexander of the Forbes Burnham Foundation stated that he was pleased with the trun out at the event noting that Forbes Burnham was a champion for youth when he served this nation.
He informed that the race was a significant since it started on Carifesta Avenue, Burnham it was who started Carifesta and the race turned back at Belfield where Burnham resided. Alexander stated that the Foundation will continue to sponsor the event.
