ALBERT Philander returned one hour 24 minutes 01.31 seconds in winning the feature 35-lap event of the Anchor Hi-Calcium Cheese 11-race programme at the National Park yesterday.
Philander also won three of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs while second place finisher Leer Nunes won three. The other two primes were won by Robin Persaud who placed third overall.
Enzo Matthews finished fourth, Andy Singh fifth and Christopher Persaud sixth.
After about six laps into the race, Robin Persaud attacked the pack and opened a small lead but Nunes responded and took control of things soon after.
He maintained the lead until 11 laps remained when he suffered a puncture and was overtaken by Philander who led for another two laps before being rejoined by Nunes who had gotten a quick change of wheel.
The duo stayed together for the remainder of the race until the final 250 metres when Nunes jumped Philander who responded almost immediately and overtook Nunes with approximately 100 metres remaining and pipped him (Nunes) to the line to take first place.
Robin Persaud then edged Andy Singh to take third while Enzo Matthews and Christopher Persaud finished fifth and sixth respectively.
Before making the presentation of prizes to the respective winners, Geddes Grant’s Brands Manager Stuart May congratulated the participants and said it was good to see the event so well supported by both cyclists and cycling enthusiasts and charged the cyclists to perform better in order to not only do well domestically, but also represent Guyana on the world stage.
