Greaves takes feature 35-lap event at Digicel 11-race cycle meet

Richard Charles & Raymond Perez cop 2 firsts each

Alonzo Greaves turned the tables on Robin Persaud in a four-man sprint home to win the feature 35-lap event at the inaugural Digicel sponsored 11-race cycle meet held at the National Park and organised by National Cycling coach Hassan Mohamed.
Greaves, who also made a clean sweep of the eight prime prizes won in 1 hour 25 minutes 49 seconds. Lear Nunes placed third with the 4th to 6th positions taken by Daniel Ramchurejee, Mark Lewis and Jamal Nicholas.
Richard Charles showed his versatility by taking wins in the Upright and BMX open races. He was the first to the finish line ahead of Marlon King and Kevin Edwards in the upright clash with Edwards and Keon Thomas 2nd and 3rd in the BMX race.
Young BMX star Raymond Perez was in a class of his own yet again, with victories in the BMX 6-9 and 9-12 races. Perez won ahead of Keon Harris and Dineshwar ‘Chucky’ Ragubeer in the 6-9 class. Following him (Perez) to the line in the 9-12 clash were Davendra Tooknauth and Akin Ruther of Berbice.
Neil Reece, another Berbician, was unstoppable in the juvenile’s 10-lap battle, winning ahead of Kurt La Rose and fellow Berbician Marcia Dick. Dick, who along with Naiomi Singh will be representing Guyana at the Inter Guiana games slated for next month in Suriname, was again in fine form.
Dick also won the mixed 12-14 race, beating into second Singh and male rider, Emanuel Klass. Nicholas Alves took the 12-14 open contest over Sanjay Bagnauth and Ravindra Karim of Berbice.
In the veteran’s class, Thoram Harris, Virgil Jones and Kennard Lovell placed in that order in the under-50 category while in the over-50 class Montgomery Parris ruled the roost ahead of Aubrey Gravesande and Lloyd Williams.
Head of Sales and Distribution at Digicel Nalini Vieira in remarks before the presentation of prizes disclosed that they were very happy to be a part of the activity highlighting that Digicel has a policy of giving back to the Community and this was just one of the many ways they have been doing so. “We are very proud to be supporting you young riders and we compliment you for the exciting races we witnessed here. We want to assure you all that we will continue to play our part in the development of cycling in Guyana.”
Other Digicel representatives at yesterday’s activity were Business Development Officer Gavin Hope and Marketing Executive, Shirwin Campbell.
Mohamed thanked Digicel for making their debut in terms of sponsoring cycling at the National Park and noted that he was looking forward to a continuous partnership with the company.
